Qass. Book. / \ THE MOBILE DIRECTORY, FOR 1837. BMIMJLJEY. / MOBILE DIRECTORY, EMBRACING NAMES OF THE HEADS OF FAMILIES AND PERSONS IN BUSINESS, ALPHABETICALLY ARRANGED. FOR 1837. MOBILE: PUBLISHED BY H. M. McGUIRE AND T. C. FAY, Water street, a few doors North of Dauphin. 1837. D^^^ ,V-^' EXPLANATIONS. n order to make the Directory as brief as possible, we have made use of letters and abbreviations, which with the '"^ -owing explanations will be readily understood. c. for corner. n, c. near corner. r. n. c. residence near corner. b. between. f. w. c. free woman of color. f. m. c. free man of color. r. residence. N. S. E. W. the cardinal points. Govt. Government street. Where the name of the street is not expressed, it is to be understood, as Commerce means Commerce street. Names will frequently occur, where no residence has been given other than the place of doing business, because none were ever received; and in some instances, there is a name without either a place for doing business, or a family resi- dence : as they neglected to hand them in before the direc- tory went to press, we do not feel accountable for the defi- ciency, particularly as we gave timely notice in the city papers to those concerned. We have endeavored to observe a uniformity in giving the profession or occupation after the name — then the place of office, store, &c., then in case of a single individual of a firm named, r. is always put before the private residence. In case of a copartnership, the firm is first inserted, then the individual names composing the same — who are also arranged in alphabetical order, and vrivate residence given if requisite. Heads of families and porsons established in business, almost exclusively form the register. STRANGERS' GUIDE. The streets run North and South parallel with the river in the order arranged, from No. 1 Front to No. 18 Scott. The cross streets running from the river begin v\ath Dau- phin at No. 1 and extend to Adams No. 8 North. Those running parallel on the South of Dauphin, begin with Conti No. 1, and extend to Canal No. 8 South. St. Joseph heads in Dauphin near Dauphin street Hotel, and runs North. St, Emanuel heads above St. Joseph on Dauphin and runs South. This order of the streets embraces nearly all that are named in the Directory. 1. Front street. 1. Dauphin street.* 2. Commerce.
